Whakato

Whakato is an independent fashion label putting forward new solutions to existing problems. The role of raw materials in making an eco-friendly product is highly inevitable and occupies an important proportion compared to other elements in the entire life cycle of a textile product. Most brands have a very close working relationship with their layer 1 teams (the Cut, Make, Trim part of what we do- the “made in”) However, the layer 2 team members (the makers of our fabrics) are often hidden under blankets of agents and wholesalers. And getting through them is not an easy step. This means that learning more about the people and procedures involved in creating the fabrics we value so highly in our design process necessitates a little more digging and constant follow-up.

We work with farmers and weavers to bridge the gap between them and the end consumer while keeping the sustainable fashion conversation open. We work with fibers extracted from unusual plants and make clothes with minimum impact on nature.

Our clothes are made in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh from organic and recycled materials. From our tedious research to keep the supply chain transparent to keeping close checks on the entire life cycle of a textile product., we work tirelessly to ensure that every step of the journey is as thoughtful and sustainable as possible. Our search for ways to improve is just as tireless. When you buy one of our intelligently crafted garments, you’re becoming part of the solution.
